During the first five days of the battle, the Germans murdered around 60,000 civilians in the Wola district of Warsaw. Soviet troops stood on the east bank of the Vistula from September, but they did nothing to help the insurgents. Supply drops from Allied aircraft were rarely successful while casualties among aircraft and people were heavy. Warsaw was dying alone in the eyes of the whole world...
The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II operation in the summer of 1944 by the Polish underground resistance, led by the Home Army, to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. The uprising was timed to coincide with the withdrawal of German forces from Poland ahead of the Soviet advance. Approaching the eastern suburbs of the city, the Red Army temporarily halted combat operations, allowing the Germans to regroup and overcome Polish resistance and raze the city in retaliation. The uprising lasted 63 days with little outside support. It was the largest military effort undertaken by a European resistance movement during World War II.
The game covers the entire uprising, from the first to the last day of fighting, giving players a chance to see if there was a way to win this possibly pointless battle. The German player controls Whermacht, SS, and Eastern Collaboration forces, while the Polish player controls all major underground resistance units as well as the pro-Soviet Polish People's Army which attempted to aid the uprising.
The game is driven by command points - each player has a limited number. Players spend command points to perform certain actions such as move, attack, resupply, introduce reinforcements, pacify, ruin, or build barricades. There are also maps describing various events that occurred throughout the uprising.
