The Battle of Arsuf took place on September 7, 1191, at Arsuf, in the Holy Land, as part of the Third Crusade. It opposed a strong Crusader army of 20,000 men commanded by Richard Coeur de Lion, reinforced by contingents of Knights of the Order of the Temple led by Robert de Sablé and Knights of the Order of L'Hôpital led by Garnier de Naplouse. , to an Ayyubid army 20,000 strong (most of them mounted), commanded by Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb. This is the first Crusader victory for 14 years, the last dating from 1177, when Baldwin IV of Jerusalem at the Battle of Montgisard managed to repel an Ayyubid force also led by Saladin.
